WooCommerce WhatsApp Integration: Orders Become WhatsApp Workflows

Last updated: October 2026

InboxWA connects to a WooCommerce store with a standard REST API key, creates webhooks for new and updated orders, and uses each order to create a contact and start a WhatsApp workflow. Here is exactly what it does and what it does not.

How do you connect WooCommerce to WhatsApp?

  1. Create API keys in WooCommerce. In your store admin, generate a REST API consumer key and consumer secret.
  2. Enter them in InboxWA. On the Integrations page, add your store URL, consumer key and consumer secret. InboxWA stores them against your account.
  3. Test the connection. InboxWA calls your store's system status endpoint to confirm the keys work.
  4. Subscribe to orders. One action creates the webhooks on your store for order.created and order.updated.

Incoming webhooks are verified with WooCommerce's signature header and compared in constant time, so forged order events are rejected.

What happens when an order arrives?

On a new order, InboxWA creates a contact from the order details (tagged with its source) and triggers your workflow, so the customer can receive an order confirmation or follow-up on WhatsApp. A purchase also ends any cart-recovery sequence still running for that customer, so nobody gets a "you left something behind" message after paying.

InboxWA can also list your recent orders and products from the connected store, which is useful for checking that the connection is reading the right data.

What can you automate?

What are the limits?

  • Order events only. The WooCommerce connection subscribes to order created and updated. Unlike the Shopify integration, it does not receive abandoned-checkout events, so WooCommerce abandoned cart recovery is not triggered from the store today.
  • A phone number is needed on the order to message the customer.
  • Consent and templates. Marketing messages need opt-in, and messages outside the 24-hour window need Meta-approved templates.
  • This page describes what the integration does today, including its limits. If you need something it does not do, our custom integration service scopes it as a project.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a plugin to connect WooCommerce to InboxWA?

No plugin is needed. InboxWA connects through WooCommerce's REST API using a consumer key and secret, and receives events through standard WooCommerce webhooks.

Which WooCommerce events does InboxWA use?

Order created and order updated. A new order creates a contact and triggers your workflow, and it also ends any cart-recovery sequence running for that customer.

Does InboxWA recover abandoned WooCommerce carts?

Not from the store directly today. The WooCommerce connection works on order events. Abandoned-checkout events are available through the Shopify integration.

Is the WooCommerce webhook secure?

Yes. Each webhook is verified using WooCommerce's HMAC signature header before it is processed, and forged requests are rejected.
