This is a working template pack, not a strategy essay. Every message below is written to clear Meta's template review under the marketing category, carries {{1}}-style variables your platform fills at send time, and ends with the opt-out line WhatsApp expects on promotional templates. Copy, adjust the voice, submit; Meta's review typically returns in under 24 hours.
If you want the full strategy behind the sequence, read our abandoned cart recovery guide. If you want the whole thing running without code, the abandoned cart recovery solution shows the build. This page is the copy layer: what to send, when to send it, and how to get it approved.
Why do abandoned cart messages work better on WhatsApp than email?
Because they get seen, and they get answered. WhatsApp recovers 15-25% of abandoned carts, while recovery emails manage 5-8% open rates; with 596M+ WhatsApp users in India (Statista, 2024), your buyer is already living in the app your message lands in. And unlike email, a cart message starts a conversation: "is COD available?" or "does it come in XL?" are one reply away from a completed order.
The channel is also where Indian commerce already happens: 80% of Indian SMBs say WhatsApp is essential to their business (Meta survey). One practical bonus most brands miss: when a customer replies to your cart reminder, a 24-hour service window opens in which your answers are free-form and free to send (first 1,000 user-initiated conversations a month carry no Meta fee).
What is the right timing for a cart recovery sequence?
Three touches inside 48 hours, then silence. The first message lands 15-60 minutes after abandonment while intent is still warm; a nudge with social proof follows at 24 hours; a last call with a capped discount closes at 48 hours. At most one final note goes out around day 7 when the cart is released, and every touch pauses the moment the customer replies.
| Touch | Send window | Category | Job of the message | Templates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First touch | 15-60 min after abandonment | Marketing | Remind, reassure, remove payment friction. No discount. | 1, 2, 3 |
| Nudge | 24 hours | Marketing | Social proof, invite the objection, offer help. | 4, 5, 6 |
| Last call | 48 hours | Marketing | Capped discount, honest deadline, then stop. | 7, 8, 9 |
| Situational | On trigger (price drop, low stock, COD) | Marketing | Convert a specific moment, not a schedule. | 10, 11 |
| Final release | Day 7, then stop for good | Marketing | Close the loop politely, release the cart. | 12 |
Every touch pauses when the customer replies and stops permanently on STOP. Pace sends under Meta's rate limits and watch your quality rating; our bulk messaging playbook covers both.
What should the first cart message say? (Templates 1-3)
Nothing clever: remind, reassure, remove friction. The first touch recovers the most carts of the entire sequence and needs no discount; mention COD and UPI explicitly because payment doubt is the single biggest checkout killer in India. Keep it under 60 words so it reads in one glance.

What makes a good 24-hour nudge? (Templates 4-6)
Proof and questions, not pressure. By hour 24 the buyer has either forgotten the cart or is sitting on a doubt, so show that other people bought (order counts, ratings) and explicitly invite the objection. Replies land in your team inbox as a free-form conversation, where a human or the AI answers sizing, delivery and payment questions on the spot.
Template 4 · The social-proof nudge
Category: Marketing · Send: 24 h · Variables: {{1}} first name · {{2}} product · {{3}} orders last 30 days · {{4}} rating · {{5}} checkout URL

Order yahan complete karein: {{5}}
Band karne ke liye STOP likhein.
How do you write the 48-hour last call? (Templates 7-9)
One capped incentive, one honest deadline, then stop. A 10% code with a rupee ceiling and a real expiry converts fence-sitters without teaching your list that abandoning a cart mints coupons. If you have genuine scarcity, use it truthfully; invented countdowns are a template-rejection risk and, worse, a quality-rating risk once customers notice.
Template 7 · The capped-discount last call
Category: Marketing · Send: 48 h · Variables: {{1}} first name · {{2}} code · {{3}} cap in ₹ · {{4}} expiry date · {{5}} checkout URL
Hi {{1}}, final reminder about your cart.
Use code {{2}} for 10% off, capped at ₹{{3}}. It is valid until {{4}} at 11:59 pm, after which your cart is released and the code stops working.
Checkout: {{5}}
Reply STOP to opt out.
Template 8 · The honest scarcity last call
Category: Marketing · Send: 48 h · Variables: {{1}} first name · {{2}} units left · {{3}} product · {{4}} size/variant · {{5}} checkout URL
Hi {{1}}, quick stock update: only {{2}} units of {{3}} are left in {{4}}.
Your cart holds no reservation, so it may sell out before checkout. If you still want it, now is the time:
{{5}}
Reply STOP to opt out.
Template 9 · Hinglish last call
Category: Marketing · Send: 48 h · Variables: {{1}} first name · {{2}} code · {{3}} cap in ₹ · {{4}} expiry · {{5}} checkout URL
Hi {{1}}, aakhri reminder: aapka cart jald hi expire ho raha hai.
Code {{2}} se 10% off milega (maximum ₹{{3}}), sirf {{4}} tak valid.
Abhi order karein: {{5}}
Yeh is cart ke liye aakhri message hai. Band karne ke liye STOP likhein.
Which situational variants are worth adding? (Templates 10-12)
Three earn their keep. A COD-to-prepaid switch matters because India's COD RTO runs 25-35%, and prepaid orders sidestep it; it pairs naturally with a COD verification flow, which cuts RTO 30-45% on confirmed orders (the maths is in our COD verification guide). A price-drop alert converts sale events, and a final release note closes the loop politely instead of ghosting the customer.
Template 10 · The COD-to-prepaid switch
Category: Marketing · Send: on COD-heavy carts · Variables: {{1}} first name · {{2}} product · {{3}} COD handling fee · {{4}} dispatch hours · {{5}} checkout URL
Hi {{1}}, your order for {{2}} is one step from done.
Pay now by UPI and shipping is free (COD adds ₹{{3}} handling). Either way, your order ships within {{4}} hours of confirmation.
Choose payment and finish here: {{5}}

Template 11 · The price-drop alert
Category: Marketing · Send: when a carted item's price drops · Variables: {{1}} first name · {{2}} product · {{3}} new price · {{4}} old price · {{5}} checkout URL
Hi {{1}}, good news: {{2}} from your cart just dropped to ₹{{3}} (was ₹{{4}}).
The price at checkout is already updated, and it applies as long as the sale runs:
{{5}}
Reply STOP to opt out.
Template 12 · The final cart release
Category: Marketing · Send: day 7, once · Variables: {{1}} first name · {{2}} product · {{3}} checkout URL
Hi {{1}}, we clear saved carts every week, and yours is due for release tomorrow.
If you still want {{2}}, this is the easiest moment to order: {{3}}
Either way, this is our last reminder about this cart. No more messages unless you shop with us again.
Reply STOP to opt out of all updates.
How do you map the {{1}} variables?
Map once, reuse everywhere. The pack deliberately keeps to a handful of variable slots so one data payload from your store can feed all 12 templates.
- {{1}} first name. Pull it from the checkout or contact record and always set a fallback value ("there", or "ji" in the Hinglish variants); Meta rejects sends with empty variables.
- {{2}} product name. For multi-item carts, pass the highest-value item, or a compiled list for template 2 (one item per line, keep it to five or fewer).
- Amounts and counts. Cart totals rounded to the rupee, honest stock counts, real order numbers for social proof. Never hard-code these into the template body; keep them as variables so one approval covers every product.
- Checkout link. Put it in a URL button with a dynamic suffix on your own domain rather than a long pasted URL; it reads cleaner and taps better. Templates above mark button placements as [Button: ...].
- Discount codes. Generate per-customer codes so your last-call offer does not leak onto coupon aggregator sites.
On InboxWA the mapping is largely done for you on Shopify stores: live catalogue sync fills product name, price, stock and variant, and the flow injects the checkout link automatically.
How do you get abandoned cart templates approved by Meta?
Submit under marketing, make the samples look real, keep the copy calm. Review is mostly automated and typically returns in under 24 hours; nearly every rejection we see is self-inflicted. The checklist:
- Category: marketing, always. Cart reminders are promotional in Meta's eyes. Submitting them as utility to chase the ₹0.1150 rate gets them recategorised and delays approval.
- Realistic sample values. "Ayaan", "Cotton kurta, size M", "https://yourstore.in/cart/ab12" pass; "test", "123" and "xyz" invite rejection.
- Calm copy. No all-caps words, no stacked exclamation marks, no "100% guaranteed" or "FREE!!!" claims. Everything in this pack already complies.
- Keep the opt-out line. "Reply STOP to opt out" in the body signals compliance to reviewers and protects your quality rating with recipients.
- Buttons over bare links. A URL button on your verified domain, plus an optional quick-reply button like "I have a question", improves both approval odds and response rates.
- Hinglish is fine. Submit under the English language code, write in Latin script, and keep spelling consistent between body and samples.
- Edits restart review. Any change to an approved template creates a new version that queues again, so proofread before submitting.
What does the sequence cost to send?
At Meta's January 2026 India rates, a marketing template costs ₹0.8560 plus 18% GST, about ₹1.01 delivered. A full three-touch sequence is roughly ₹3.03 per abandoned cart, and customer replies cost you nothing extra: each reply opens a 24-hour service window, free for the first 1,000 user-initiated conversations a month. Run your own volumes through our WhatsApp API pricing calculator.
The trap is not Meta's rate but your platform's margin on it. Several Indian BSPs add 10-30% on top of Meta's published prices, a spread our API pricing comparison documents vendor by vendor. InboxWA charges zero markup: a prepaid wallet billed at Meta's exact published rates, no minimum top-up, with plans from ₹999/month on the pricing page.
The recovery maths forgives almost any send volume. Take 1,000 abandoned carts a month at a ₹1,200 average order value: the full sequence costs about ₹3,030. Recover even 15% of those carts, the bottom of WhatsApp's measured band, and that is ₹1,80,000 of revenue brought back for the price of a pizza dinner.
Templates are 20% of it; the sequence is the rest
Any of these 12 messages will pass Meta review. What actually recovers carts is discipline: first touch inside the hour, discount only at 48 hours and capped, hard stop after three touches, instant pause on reply, instant suppression on STOP.
That discipline is exactly what a flow enforces better than a human with a broadcast button. InboxWA ships abandoned cart recovery as a prebuilt no-code flow: connect Shopify, pick your approved templates, set the delays. The flow pauses when the buyer replies and hands the chat to your team inbox or the AI, which answers from your live catalogue and never invents a price.
How do you stay compliant (opt-in, opt-out, DPDP)?
Cart recovery is marketing messaging, so consent is not optional. The rules that keep you approved, deliverable and on the right side of India's data law:
- Collect opt-in at checkout. A clear checkbox ("Send my order updates and offers on WhatsApp") before the first business-initiated message. India's DPDP Act expects provable consent; InboxWA maintains an opt-in consent ledger per contact.
- Honour STOP instantly. One STOP suppresses the contact across every campaign, not just this flow. Slow opt-out handling is the fastest route to a falling quality rating.
- Cap the frequency. Three touches plus one final release per cart, maximum. Do not chain a cart sequence into a promo broadcast the same week.
- Watch your quality rating. InboxWA's broadcast dispatcher paces sends under Meta's rate limits and monitors the rating, throttling before Meta does. The habits behind that are in the bulk messaging playbook.
Frequently asked questions
Are abandoned cart WhatsApp templates marketing or utility category?
Marketing. Meta treats cart reminders as promotional content, so submit them under the marketing category, which costs ₹0.8560 per message in India (January 2026 rates, plus 18% GST). Templates submitted as utility to save money get recategorised by Meta, and the mismatch only delays approval.
How many abandoned cart messages should I send on WhatsApp?
Three touches over 48 hours: a reminder at 15-60 minutes, a social-proof nudge at 24 hours and a last call with a capped discount at 48 hours, plus at most one final release message around day 7. Always pause the sequence the moment the customer replies, and suppress them permanently if they send STOP.
Do I need opt-in consent to send cart recovery messages on WhatsApp?
Yes. Meta requires prior opt-in for business-initiated messages and India's DPDP Act expects provable consent, so collect it at checkout with a clear checkbox and store the record. InboxWA keeps an opt-in consent ledger per contact and stops the flow automatically for anyone who opts out.
How long does Meta take to approve an abandoned cart template?
Typically under 24 hours. Approvals go faster when you submit under the marketing category, use realistic sample values for every variable, avoid all-caps and stacked exclamation marks, and include an opt-out line. Any edit after approval creates a new version that goes through review again.
What discount should the last-call message offer?
A capped one: 10% off with a rupee ceiling (for example, max ₹150) and a hard expiry works well without training buyers to abandon carts for coupons. Never put a discount in the first touch; most carts recovered in the first hour come back at full price.
Can I send abandoned cart templates in Hinglish?
Yes. Submit the template under the English language code and write the body in Latin-script Hinglish; Meta approves these routinely, and this pack includes three Hinglish variants (templates 3, 6 and 9). Keep spelling consistent between the body and your sample values, and keep the opt-out line intact.
How much does a WhatsApp cart recovery sequence cost in India?
About ₹3.03 per abandoned cart if all three marketing messages go out (₹0.8560 each at Meta's January 2026 India rate, plus 18% GST), and customer replies are free service messages within the 24-hour window. On InboxWA you pay Meta's exact rate with zero markup through a prepaid wallet with no minimum.
Recover carts this week, not next quarter
The abandoned cart flow is prebuilt in InboxWA: connect Shopify, submit these templates, go live. 7-day free trial of Growth features, no card, zero markup on Meta fees.
