WhatsApp Abandoned Cart Recovery Guide — InboxWa

Why WhatsApp beats email for cart recovery
Email cart recovery gets 20% open rates and 2-3% click rates. WhatsApp gets 95% open rates within 3 minutes and 15-25% click rates. The math is simple: if you're only doing email, you're leaving 80% of recoverable revenue on the table.
The key difference: WhatsApp messages arrive as a notification on the customer's phone, not buried in a promotions tab. And with interactive buttons, the customer can tap "Complete Order" instead of clicking a link, opening a browser, and navigating back to their cart.
How the flow works
The abandoned cart recovery flow is a 3-stage escalation. Each stage increases urgency and incentive:
- Stage 1 (1 hour after abandon): Friendly reminder with product name, price, and a "Complete Order" button. No discount yet — many customers just forgot.
- Stage 2 (24 hours): If no response, send a 10% discount code with urgency ("expires in 24 hours"). The discount converts fence-sitters.
- Stage 3 (48 hours): Final nudge — "Your cart expires today." This is the last chance before we let go.
What triggers the flow
When a customer adds items to their cart on your Shopify store and starts checkout but doesn't complete the purchase, Shopify records it as an open checkout. Our system detects this in two ways:
- Shopify webhook (
checkouts/create) fires when a customer enters checkout — we save their phone, cart items, and total to our database. - Abandon detection runs every 15 minutes. If a saved checkout is older than 1 hour and no matching order exists, we mark it as abandoned and trigger the flow.
The nodes, step by step
1. Trigger (Webhook)
The flow starts with a webhook trigger that listens for the cart_abandoned event. When the abandon detector fires, it passes variables into the flow: {{vars.customer_name}}, {{vars.product_name}}, {{vars.cart_total}}, and {{vars.checkout_url}}.
2. Wait 1 Hour
A Delay node waits 1 hour before sending the first message. This is deliberate — sending immediately feels invasive. One hour is the sweet spot: the customer has moved on but the purchase intent is still fresh.
3. Send Buttons — Cart Reminder
The first message uses interactive buttons (not plain text). The customer sees their product name, price, and two tappable buttons:

Want to complete your order?
[✅ Complete Order] [❌ Remove Items]
If the customer taps Complete Order, they get the checkout link immediately. If they tap Remove or don't respond within 24 hours, the flow escalates to Stage 2.
4. Stage 2 — Discount Offer
After 24 hours of silence, a second message offers 10% off with a unique code. The discount is the nudge that converts hesitant buyers. The message includes the discounted price so the customer can see the savings instantly.
5. Stage 3 — Final Nudge
48 hours later, the final message creates urgency: "Your cart expires today." No new discount — just a reminder that the reserved items won't be held forever. After this, the contact is tagged cart_abandoned_final for future segmentation.
How to customize
- Change timing: Edit the Delay nodes to adjust when each message sends. Some brands prefer 30min → 12hr → 36hr.
- Adjust discount: Change the discount code and percentage in the Stage 2 message text.
- Add product image: Attach a media file to the button message — customers who see the product image convert 40% higher.
- Add a 4th stage: Drag a new Delay + Send Message after Stage 3 for a "We removed your cart" farewell message.
Expected results
D2C brands using WhatsApp cart recovery see 22-35% recovery rates, compared to 5-8% with email alone. The ROI is immediate — every recovered cart is pure incremental revenue.
Track your results in the Workflow Analytics dashboard. You'll see exactly how many carts entered the flow, how many recovered at each stage, and the total revenue recovered.
